On the whole, divorce rates have been declining in recent years. However, there is one exception to this- gray divorces.
Gray divorce involves couples over the age of 50. These are couples that may be at the end of their careers and have completed their parental duties.
Why are couples in this age bracket getting divorced at higher rates than others?
Health issues
Married couples make a commitment to remain together in sickness and in health. Nonetheless, this can be tricky. Chronic health issues can place tremendous strain on a relationship. The person directly impacted by the illness may be unable to do what they used to. The partner may not know how to cope or help.
The older a person gets, the more likely they are to be impacted by chronic health issues. This is one reason quoted by many divorcing couples over the age of 50.
People change
It can take a long time for a couple to realize that they have grown apart. They may have been preoccupied with careers and/or raising a family. Sometimes, it is not until later in life that a couple realizes they have little in common.
This realization often occurs when adult kids move out of the home. This is called empty nest syndrome and it is cited by many couples over 50.
As we get older, our views, priorities, ambitions and overall outlook on life can change significantly. If you’re in an unhappy relationship, then there is no harm in exploring your legal rights. Seek guidance to find out more about the divorce process.
